Music from around the world will take center stage when SUNY Distinguished Professor Karolyn Stonefelt presents the first Brown Bag Lunch of the fall semester on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Williams Center Room S204.
鈥淭hrough some active participation with the audience, I hope to present some interesting insights into the music and how I discovered it; and to raise some thought about why, as outsiders, we pursue participation in the 鈥榦ther,鈥" Dr. Stonefelt said, 鈥渁nd what is the 鈥榦ther鈥?"
Stonefelt is chair of the Percussion Studies Area in the School of Music and conducts the Fredonia Percussion Ensemble. Early in her Fredonia career, Stonefelt founded the Fredonia African Xylophone and Drumming Ensembles as a direct result of her Fulbright Senior Scholar Research award to study music, theatre and dance in Ghana, as well as her musical training in New York City and Indiana University.
Dr. Ivani Vassoler-Froelich of the Department of Politics and International Affairs and coordinator of International Studies will give opening remarks.
鈥淧ositive and Negative Effects of Globalization鈥 is the theme of the 2019-2020 Brown Bag Lunch series, sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The series offers monthly, informal talks by Fredonia faculty members and guest speakers and is free and open to the public. A brief discussion follows each 20-minute presentation. Food is available beginning at 11:30 a.m.
