Dalian Bryan in King Concert Hall.
The Fredonia Wind Ensemble will present a concert that features a performance by Concerto Competition winner Dalian Bryan on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m., in King Concert Hall.
The opening selection to be performed by the ensemble, conducted by Dr. Paula Holcomb, is 鈥淔anfare for the Uncommon Woman, No. 1,鈥 by Joan Tower. It was inspired by Aaron Copland鈥檚 鈥淔anfare for the Common Man鈥 and employs the same instrumentation. It will be followed by 鈥淪ussex Murmurs Carol,鈥 a traditional folk song, and 鈥淚mmovable Do,鈥 which was written around one single pitch; both are Percy Grainger compositions.
Mr. Bryan, a graduate student studying Music Theory/Composition and Music Performance, from Atlanta, Ga., will perform Karl Jenkins鈥 Concerto for Euphonium. It features two movements, 鈥淚t Takes Two,鈥 a tango, and a fun dance, 鈥淎 Troika Tidy?鈥
The final selection will be David Maslanka鈥檚 epic Symphony No. 4, widely considered one of the top pieces of music for wind ensembles. Its backbone is the hymn tune 鈥淥ld Hundred,鈥 along with several other hymns such as the Bach chorales 鈥淥nly Trust in God to Guide You鈥 and 鈥淐hrist Who Makes Us Holy鈥 and original melodies which are hymn-like in nature.
The concert is free and open to the public.
