Western New York’s presidential history will be explored in a presentation as part of SUNY Fredonia’s Civic Discourse programming.

In “Western New York’s Unique Presidential Connections,” Jeff Schober, a trustee of the Buffalo Presidential Center, will discuss the state’s connection to national politics and civic engagement. His talk, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. in Williams Center Room S204, is free and open to the public.

Through stories about presidents, vice presidential candidates, first ladies and historic events, Mr. Schober highlights how local history connects to broader themes of democracy and informed citizenship. Attendees will gain insight into how past moments of leadership and civic participation continue to shape political life today. Light refreshments will be served during the event.

Schober, a retired English and Journalism teacher at Frontier High School in Hamburg, NY, is the co-founder of -- a website featuring long-form stories about notable people and events in western New York, and the best-selling author of 10 books.

“This lecture provides an opportunity for students and community members to connect western New York’s presidential history to the ongoing responsibilities of citizenship,” said Associate Professor Angela McGowan-Kirsch. “Understanding our region’s unique contributions to the presidency helps illuminate the ways we all can engage thoughtfully in civic life,” added Dr. McGowan-Kirsch, who is chair of the American Democracy Project.

A voter registration drive will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., and again from noon to 1 p.m. All attendees are encouraged to participate in the lecture and the lunch that follows. 

The program is sponsored by the American Democracy Project with support from the Carnahan Jackson Fund for the Humanities of the Fredonia College Foundation. Lunch is being provided with support from a Faculty Student Association grant.
