The SUNY Fredonia Wind Ensemble opens the year with exciting works exploring beginnings, in a performance slated for Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m., in King Concert Hall.

The concert will open with John Leszczynski's 鈥淪cherzo a la Britten,鈥 an exciting work which with canonic spirals throughout. 鈥淐olonial Song鈥 by Percy Grainger uses Australian folk music to showcase the timbres of the ensemble.

The New York Philharmonic commissioned Joseph Turrin to celebrate Kurt Masur鈥檚 10-year anniversary as its maestro. Turrin featured fantastic wind, brass and percussionists to honor Masur in 鈥淗emispheres,鈥 which is an exploration of the beginnings of the earth. 鈥淒鈥檜n Matin de Prin temps鈥 by the French composer, Lili Boulanger, follows in the program.

The evening will culminate with 鈥淛urassic Park Soundtrack Highlights鈥 by John Williams, arranged by Paul Lavender.

Dr. Paula Holcomb, as Conductor of the Wind Ensemble, noted, 鈥淭he Wind Ensemble has a special excitement and passion as we come together following COVID. These very special students who lived through isolation and are excited to be making music together as they link their hearts with the music. They are passionate, and their joy is contagious!
