After more than six years of planning, research and preparation, Rockefeller Arts Center at SUNY Fredonia is looking to give audience members a night to remember when it presents 鈥淏ig Band Christmas Spectacular鈥 on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.
鈥淏ig Band Christmas Spectacular鈥 showcases 10 of SUNY Fredonia鈥檚 talented student singers and dancers backed up by The Little Apple Big Band, under the direction of Bruce Johnstone, director of jazz studies at SUNY Fredonia. The concert features instrumental numbers, vocal solos, group numbers and dance routines.
鈥淚鈥檝e had the idea of doing a big band Christmas concert for some time now,鈥 said Rockefeller Arts Center Director Jefferson Westwood, the producer of the Christmas concert.
About six-and-a-half years ago, Mr. Westwood began acquiring the charts (or printed music) for this show.
鈥淭he charts have come from all over the place,鈥 he said. 鈥淪ome are from the regular online retailers of jazz ensemble charts, but also from some more of the out-of-the-way publishers. This included Lush Life Music of London, England, who specializes in note-for-note transcriptions of popular big band hits of the past.鈥
The songs include 鈥淚t鈥檚 Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas,鈥 a jazz version of 鈥淭he Nutcracker Suite,鈥 鈥淲hite Christmas,鈥 鈥淚鈥檝e Got Love to Keep Me Warm,鈥 鈥淗ome for the Holidays,鈥 鈥淪anta Baby,鈥 鈥淒o You Hear What I Hear?鈥 and many more with arrangements by and in the style of Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller, Les Brown, John La Barbera and Tom Kubis.
鈥淚 have developed a relationship with the arrangers at Lush Life Music over the years and I have been a frequent customer of theirs for our commencement-eve productions,鈥 Mr. Westwood said. 鈥淭wo or three years ago, I suggested that they do Les Brown鈥檚 extended (almost eight minutes long) swing arrangement of Tchaikovsky鈥檚 鈥楴utcracker Suite.鈥 They took me up on the suggestion and I think I was one of the first people to buy it.鈥
Mr. Westwood explained he found much of the music for the concert by purchasing big band CDs.
鈥淲hen there is a tune I really like, I scour the internet for the composer/arranger,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his is how we came to acquire our chart for 鈥楧eck the Halls,鈥 which Nashville arranger Chris McDonald had done for a holiday CD but never published.鈥
While many of the arrangements came through outside publishers, Mr. Westwood said the concert will feature others that were done especially for this production by Mike McGough, who recently earned master鈥檚 degree in music from SUNY Fredonia.
鈥淏ig Band Christmas Spectacular鈥 is a DFT Communications Pops Series event sponsored by Bahgat & Laurito-Bahgat, Certified Public Accountants as part of the 2012-13 Lake Shore Savings Season.
Tickets are available through the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center (673-3501 or ).
