An all 20th century program will be presented by the College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge, on Saturday, March 3, 8 p.m., at King Concert Hall.
The concert is open to the public and admission is free.
Assistant conductor will lead the orchestra in the opening selection, 鈥淭he Overture to Colas Breugnon,鈥 by Soviet composer Dimitri Kabalevsky.
It will be followed by Penderecki鈥檚 鈥淒e Natura Sonoris No. 1,鈥 a hair-raising piece used in the film 鈥淭he Shining,鈥 and Stravinsky鈥檚 dramatic 鈥淪ymphony in 3 Movements.鈥
The concert鈥檚 second half departs from the standard symphony orchestra format with a multimedia performance of 鈥淭he Planets,鈥 by Gustav Holst. Widely considered the most inventive and famous of Holst鈥檚 scores, the piece was inspired by the composer鈥檚 interest in astrology. High definition photography from NASA and images depicting the astrological symbolism of the planets will be projected onto a large screen above the orchestra, which was Holst鈥檚 vision when he wrote the piece.
鈥淭he Planets鈥 is a seven-part composition that depicts the characters of each planet: 鈥淢ars, the Bringer of War;鈥 鈥淰enus, the Bringer of Peace;鈥 鈥淢ercury, the Winged Messenger;鈥 鈥淛upiter, the Bringer of Jollity; 鈥淪aturn, the Bringer of Old Age;鈥 鈥淯ranus, the Magician;鈥 and 鈥淣eptune, the Mystic.鈥 Audiences will undoubtedly be familiar with 鈥淭he Planets,鈥 one of the most quoted and plagiarized scores of the 20th century.
