Artist and illustrator Andrea Dezs枚 will speak about the business aspects of her work and career at the Fredonia Technology Incubator鈥檚 Arts and Business Luncheon series Friday, Sept. 15, from noon to 1 p.m.

At the Arts and Business Luncheon, Ms. Dezs枚 will focus on professional practice topics including: finding and working with clients and commercial galleries, seeking and winning public art commissions, and publishing artist books. While growing up in the harsh communist regime of Romania, Dezs枚 began her craft by 鈥渃reating her own worlds filled with wishful flights to charmed lands of dark beauty and haunting iconography.鈥 Dezs枚 works across a broad range of mediums including: drawing, painting, artist books, embroidery, cut paper, animation, sculpture, site-specific installation and public art. Her permanent public art has been installed in two New York City subway stations, at the United States Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, and at City University of New York鈥檚 Borough of Manhattan Community College. Dezs枚's mosaic, 鈥淐ommunity Garden,鈥 located in a New York City subway, was recognized as Best American Public Art in 2007 by Americans for the Arts. Her editorial illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, and Harper鈥檚 Magazine.
The New York Times called Dezs枚鈥檚 16-page story, 鈥淢amushka,鈥 which she illustrated and wrote 鈥渁n illustrated fairy tale full of childlike wonders and dark, thoroughly modern portent." The story was translated into Hungarian and published by Csimota Publishing House in Budapest, Hungary. 鈥淟id茅rc,鈥 another illustrated story in the exhibition, is a tale about a woman who hatches herself a boyfriend from an egg with dire consequences. In 2014, Princeton University Press published a new translation of Grimms鈥 Fairytales which features 20 illustrations by Dezs枚.
She exhibits in museums and galleries around the world. Recent exhibition venues were held in Korea, Hungary and in the United States. Her work can also be found in New York City, Wisconsin, Japan, Albuquerque, Chicago, Philadelphia, Nagoya and Budapest. She is represented by the Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York and Pucker Gallery in Boston. Dezs枚 is an associate professor of art at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., and also maintains studios in New York City and western Massachusetts. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Hungarian University of Design in Budapest and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and Typography from the Hungarian University of Design in Budapest.
The Fredonia Technology Incubator promotes economic growth in Western New York by supporting entrepreneurship and the development of new, innovative companies into successful business ventures. The incubator provides services to startups which, in turn, create jobs in the community.
