On Saturday, April 21, SUNY Fredonia Facilities Services will host the Campus and Community Household Electronic Recycling Day, at the Park and Ride parking lot, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The recycling drive is a part of the week-long events that will end SUNY Fredonia鈥檚 5th Earth Week celebration.
SUNY Fredonia has had a history of celebrating Earth Day and two former students who were impacted by what they learned about the environment at Fredonia are Casey Whyte, '09, and Ryan Burke, '11. They first met during Dr. James Bowser鈥檚, 鈥淪cientific Revolutions鈥 class, where Burke confessed they 鈥減assed notes to each other while learning the eponymous laws of planetary motion." He added, 鈥淚 credit Dr. Bowser for intriguing us both in the class and teaching us to live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.鈥
His fiancee, Whyte, a 2009 public relations graduate, is the account manager and the main liaison between SUNY Fredonia and the company that handles the campus electronics recyclables, Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery (RCR&R). Her father is Mike Whyte, the President of RCR&R, which last year collected 436,000 pounds of electronic waste from three stations in Chautauqua County and 41 tons at SUNY Fredonia.
鈥淚t鈥檚 fantastic that my company has a way to benefit the community, as well as support SUNY Fredonia鈥檚 Go Green initiatives,鈥 said Whyte, who noted her firm ranks among the 25th largest of its kind in North America. 鈥淚 love the community outreach aspect of my job, and in this case it鈥檚 reaching out to my alma mater.鈥
Burke majored in Environmental Science at Fredonia and is currently an environmental scientist at Ravi Engineering & Land Survey, P.C., an environmental service consultant firm, in Rochester, NY.
