The Fredonia for St. Jude club will host its second Up 鈥楾il Dawn event on Friday, Nov. 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Dods Multipurpose Room.
SUNY Fredonia students and faculty are invited to form teams of five members to fill in pre-written donation letters for St. Jude Children鈥檚 Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. with the names and addresses of family and friends. The goal is to have 1,000 letters sent to raise $3,000 for the hospital. If a participant brings 35 names or more, they will be entered to win a Nintendo Wii and for every five letters, they will receive a raffle ticket to win one of many prizes.
鈥淲e know college students don鈥檛 have money to donate, but they do have time and connections,鈥 said Professor Michielli-Pendl, childhood education.
This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淪care Away Cancer,鈥 as the event takes place on Friday the 13th. After the letter writing, there will be food, music and theme related activities like pumpkin painting, donuts on a string, balloon shaving, a pie eating contest and Kan Jam. There will also be a presentation from one of the children treated at St. Jude.
St. Jude Children鈥檚 Research Hospital works to find cures and save children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization.
