The 鈥淔redonia Showcase鈥 at the 海角社区 is a traditional display of the 鈥渂est of the best鈥 works by students in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media.
This year鈥檚 edition, which opened Sept. 10 in the art gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center, may have set a new standard, according to SUNY Fredonia President Dr. Dennis Hefner.
鈥淭he quality this year was excellent, really it鈥檚 the best I鈥檝e seen in 15 years 鈥 real gems,鈥 said Dr. Hefner, after viewing the works during the opening reception for the exhibition.
There is a healthy mix of eye-catching and thought-provoking pieces among the 60 works, which were selected by professors in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media.
Included are an experimental video project in the back of the gallery that has been very captivating to most visitors and several larger oil paintings that have also proven to be very eye-catching.
Among the artists is Bethany Bjork, who said she was 鈥渉onored to be part of the showcase.鈥 Bjork is represented by an untitled sculpture about gender roles and women wearing many faces.
More than 400 people have viewed the exhibition thus far, according to Gallery Director Tina Hastings
Carlos Sanchez, a sophomore art major, is among those who have taken in the exhibition. 鈥淪ome I personally liked, others just weren鈥檛 my taste. That鈥檚 the good part of the show, there is something for everyone,鈥 he said.
The exhibition runs through Oct. 17 and it is open to the public at no charge. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
