The SUNY Fredonia Department of Mathematical Sciences will host over 200 students for the 11th Annual High School Math/Science Challenge on Friday, May 20.

Events will take place in various locations around campus with teams of students from high schools across Western New York. Students from 12 high schools will participate in various mathematics-based heroes/villains-themed contests throughout the morning. The competitions require students to use their classroom knowledge of mathematics and science and apply it first-hand in order to succeed in various events.

In addition to 鈥淏ase 鈥榚鈥 vil SMADNESS,鈥 challenges will include, 鈥淢acGyver or MacGruber鈥 to create a 鈥渧ehicle鈥 from containers, duct tape and other items; 鈥淗ero鈥檚 Formula,鈥 a geometry game taken outdoors; 鈥淏e Like the Man in Black: Walk the Line,鈥 matching a distance/time graph selected on a TI graphing calculator program; 鈥淧aleo鈥 Rock Band 鈥 Super Hero Edition,鈥 in which teams are given items including rocks and asked to create a short musical excerpt from the 鈥淪piderman鈥 song as well as explain the science involved in creating and using the 鈥渋nstruments鈥 they make; and a mathematics-based 鈥淗eroes v. Villains: Minute to Win it Skills Competition,鈥 based on the popular television show including 鈥淭he Dance Off,鈥 鈥淩ock 鈥楶latonic鈥 Solid鈥 and 鈥淐ookie Calculus.鈥

The winning teams will be awarded tee shirts and trophies.聽
