The SUNY Fredonia Department of Mathematical Sciences will host over 200 students for the 11th Annual High School Math/Science Challenge on Friday, May 20.

Events will take place in various locations around campus with teams of students from high schools across Western New York. Students from 12 high schools will participate in various mathematics-based heroes/villains-themed contests throughout the morning. The competitions require students to use their classroom knowledge of mathematics and science and apply it first-hand in order to succeed in various events.

In addition to “Base ‘e’ vil SMADNESS,” challenges will include, “MacGyver or MacGruber” to create a “vehicle” from containers, duct tape and other items; “Hero’s Formula,” a geometry game taken outdoors; “Be Like the Man in Black: Walk the Line,” matching a distance/time graph selected on a TI graphing calculator program; “Paleo’ Rock Band – Super Hero Edition,” in which teams are given items including rocks and asked to create a short musical excerpt from the “Spiderman” song as well as explain the science involved in creating and using the “instruments” they make; and a mathematics-based “Heroes v. Villains: Minute to Win it Skills Competition,” based on the popular television show including “The Dance Off,” “Rock ‘Platonic’ Solid” and “Cookie Calculus.”

The winning teams will be awarded tee shirts and trophies.
