As part of its Black History Month observance, Fredonia will welcome Ohio State University鈥檚 Treva Lindsey, assistant professor of Women鈥檚, Gender and Sexuality Studies, who will speak as part of its Ethnic Studies speakers series.
The lecture, on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Williams Center Room 204, will be held in conjunction with Fredonia鈥檚 Black History Month closing ceremony. Dr. Lindsey鈥檚 talk, 鈥淔rom 4 Little Girls to Aiyana Jones: A Modern Herstory of Anti-Black State Violence,鈥 will assist in continuing the discussion surrounding racial relations and profiling that Fredonia鈥檚 campus community is exploring this semester.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided by the BSU following the presentation.
Lindsey鈥檚 first book, 鈥淐olored No More: New Negro Womanhood in the Nation鈥檚 Capital,鈥 explores New Negro womanhood in the 20th century. It surveys how African American women crafted New Negro communities, practices, organizations and institutions which tailored to the specific needs and desires of African American women, exploring the intersectional oppression they faced at the time.
Lindsey has her own connection to Fredonia: she completed her graduate studies under the mentorship of Fredonia alumnus Mark Anthony Neal, 鈥87, 鈥93, at Duke University. Dr. Neal will visit Fredonia as well on March 10 to further contribute to the discussion.
Lindsey鈥檚 research and teaching interests include African American women鈥檚 history, black popular and expressive culture, black feminism(s), hip hop studies, critical race and gender theory, and sexual politics. In addition to her book, Lindsey has released a number of publications and appeared in various journals such as The Journal of Pan-African Studies, SOULS, African and Black Diaspora, the Journal of African American Studies and African American Review.
In addition to her print publications, Lindsey is building a strong online presence by contributing to online forums such as The Feminist Wire, HuffPost Live and Dr. Neal鈥檚 Left of Black weekly web series.
