Nationally recognized poet Daisy Fried will visit the Fredonia campus in November as the second speaker in the Department of English鈥檚 Mary Louise White Visiting Writer Series.

Her author craft talk will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m., followed by a reading at 7 p.m. Both events will take place in McEwen Hall Room 202 and are free to students and the general public.

Fried is the author of three books of poetry, 鈥淲omen鈥檚 Poetry: Poems and Advice,鈥 鈥淢y Brother is Getting Arrested Again鈥 and 鈥淪he Didn鈥檛 Mean to Do It,鈥 which won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Award. 鈥淢y Brother is Getting Arrested Again鈥 was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, as well as the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. It was also named one of Library Journal鈥檚 Top 10 Best Poetry Books of 2006. 鈥淲omen鈥檚 Poetry: Poems and Advice鈥 was added to the same Library Journal list for this year.

Fried has received numerous awards, such as a Pushcart Prize and the Cohen Award from Ploughshares. In addition to writing her own poetry, she reviews poetry books for The New York Times, Poetry, and The Threepenny Review. Recently, her poems have been published in the London Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, Poetry, The Threepenny Review and Best American Poetry.

The Visiting Writers Series gives students and others the chance to hear writer鈥檚 insights first hand, as well as to listen to writers read their own works, thus putting students closer than ever to the authors they have studied in class or have even silently admired on their own time.

鈥淥ne of the series' functions is to promote literature, inspire creativity and foster lively conversations about why writing matters by bringing authors from diverse backgrounds and literary traditions to audiences in Western N.Y.,鈥 said series organizer, Professor Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

鈥淚n addition, the Mary Louise White Reading Series serves the important function of bringing vital and exciting voices to a region that otherwise has difficult access to the arts,鈥 Nezhukumatathil added.

The event is supported by the Mary Louise White Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation and the English department.
