The English Department's Mary Louise White Visiting Writers Series will welcome its second visiting writer of the semester, Jim Daniels, to campus on Thursday, Oct. 21.
Daniels鈥 is best known for being a major figure in working-class poetry in the United States. He has written a variety of poetry books, fiction stories and screenplays over the past 40 years. In 1985, his book, 鈥淧laces/Everyone,鈥 won the inaugural Brittingham Prize in Poetry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His book of short stories, 鈥淒etroit Tales,鈥 received a bronze medal for the 2004 Foreword Book of the Year in the fiction-short stories category.
Daniels, originally from Detroit, Mich., is a poet and fiction writer educated at Alma College and Bowling Green State University. Daniels is currently a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Carnegie-Mellon University.
Daniels will be featured twice on Oct. 21, starting with a 鈥渃raft talk鈥 at 4 p.m. in 127 Fenton Hall. Then, at 7 p.m., he will perform a reading followed by a book-signing session in W101 Thompson Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
