Approval of Agenda Hearing no objections, the agenda for September 16th was approved. Approval of Minutes from Sept. 2nd, 2011 Hearing no objections, the minutes for September 9th were approved. Announcements Chair suggested holding a meeting with the GenEd Committee liaisons who will organize and coordinate the sub-committees for this cycles category assessments to get a clearer idea of how we will conduct it. Chair also distributed the assessment reports from the last cycle for this years relevant categories. Feedback from University Senate regarding proposal for Oral Communication categories Chair remarked that the Senate session went well and she will forward on Monday the recommendations brought up by the Senate for discussion next Friday. Assessment of General Education categories a. 2010-2011 reports (i.e., Social Sciences, Arts, Speaking Intensive, Natural Sciences, Humanities). Committee expressed some concerns about the Humanities report which led to a discussion about establishing a more extensive template to offer the subcommittees regarding how to conduct category assessment. While we want to defer to the subcommittees in their areas of expertise and how best to assess the relevant student learning outcomes, some parameters need to be established as guidance through the process so that the final reports can be of better use to the departments and GenEd committee. There are, however, multiple issues that need to be addressed in establishing a set of policies: having a representative set of student participants; faculty who refuse to participate; adequately assessing categories which encompass a broad diversity of disciplines; etc. b. Review of documents related to assessment policies and procedures for General Education. Omit section a regarding how well the syllabi reflects Student Learning Outcomes. Syllabi are very diverse according to departmental conventions. Committee recommended retaining section b, but including it at the end for sake of flow and understanding. Committee agreed to have these documents available only from the GenEd Assessment website (and perhaps on the Assessment website) and not to post it on the Senate website. Every professor who taught in the reviewed category will be sent a copy of the final report. The names of all those who participated may be published as part of the report. Committee ran out of time to finish reviewing the assessment policies and procedures and agreed to place the item on the agenda for next week.
