A hybrid model will be in play at the 2021 SUNY Fredonia Alumni Golf Tournament that鈥檚 been reimagined so it can also welcome alumni and other golfers from virtually anywhere to participate and help raise money to support student scholarships and the alumni association.
鈥淲e are so excited to bring the annual Fredonia Alumni Golf Tournament back in 2021,鈥 said Associate Director of Development Spencer Morgan, the tournament鈥檚 director. Like so many other events, the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
鈥淭his year, we are thrilled to offer a new hybrid version of the golf tournament to ensure the safety of our guests, volunteers and staff, while still offering an event that benefits Fredonia and our students,鈥 Mr. Morgan explained.
The new golf-at-your-own-pace component, which allows participants to golf at a club or course of their own choosing anytime between June 16 and July 16, is an attractive alternative for alumni and participants located in different parts of the country who have never played in the tournament, Morgan said.
鈥淭his option will enable those who are leery of traveling in the wake of the pandemic to participate at their leisure, from June 16 to July 16. We are also hoping this encourages some of our more avid golfers who have not been able to golf in our alumni tournament due to timing or location to participate and support Fredonia,鈥 Morgan said.
Golfers will be responsible for separate golf expenses incurred at another club or course. They are to register with the Fredonia College Foundation before they golf and report their score by emailing a picture or scan of their scorecard to tammy.crino@fredonia.edu by July 16. Scorecards will act as proof of participation and will also be entered to win prizes that will be announced on the tournament鈥檚 website. The registration fee for the golf-at-your-own-pace option is $50.
The in-person event, consisting of a scramble format with four-person teams, will be held on Friday, July 16, at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk. Registration begins at noon, followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. A barbecue lunch will be provided at the turn during the tournament.
All CDC and New York state COVID-19 guidelines will be in place. Masks are to be worn when entering the clubhouse and Shorewood鈥檚 dress code will be in place. Registration fees for the in-person event are $100 per golfer, $75 for Shorewood members.
Prize winners will be announced on the tournament鈥檚 website on Monday, July 19.
鈥淲e are also encouraging alums who golf at either the day-of event or at their own pace to submit photos of themselves golfing that we can share on our social media platforms,鈥 Morgan said. 鈥淩egardless of the changes to our event this year, we are grateful for past support and are hopeful for a fun and exciting event in 2021.鈥

The tournament was launched in 2009 to benefit the Fredonia Alumni Association and the University Police Scholarship program. It has raised over $200,000, with net proceeds going to support student scholarships and the alumni association at Fredonia.
